"The Artist and His Paintings"

 Martin Hochleitner

(from catalog: VOID. Berlin: Thomas Sturm, 2008.)

In the current field of discourse on the relationship between painting and photography the Austrian artist Thomas Sturm holds a position that can be conclusively applied to contemporary reception approaches such as realism and figuration but has to be seen also in a very specific development context.

This refers to both the long term character of his phrases and iconography as basis of his pictures. Both aspects define Sturm as a painter who was questioning his own identity and his personal recollection already in the early 90ies in a media-influenced reflection of painting. At that time, the Gmunden-born artist completed his studies at the University of Art in Linz and at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart.

While the artist’s early works were still characterized by various art historical and archetypal references, he later on developed a tendency towards more and more personal and intimate sujets. For this purpose, Thomas Sturm occasionally also used photographs from his childhood, turning them into models to be further processed by painting.

In many cases, painting appears to be a transformation of reality fragments. Sturm understands it as a vehicle to achieve transitory states in the picture, with some parts concealed and others blurred. Painting always seems to take the substance of a work to some place between the picture and reality.

The œuvre of the artist, who now lives in Berlin, features a dense sequence of cycles, series and isolated pictures which, despite the artist’s special stylistic quality, always focus on the aspect of the sujet of the picture. Over the past 15 years Sturm has developed a technical repertoire that optimally captures all potential relations between painting and photography needed to achieve the respective iconographic objective. In this sense, the artist’s work is not characterized by a progressing development model. He uses techniques in various ways, puts them aside only to use them again and analyses them in the tentative arrangement of painting. The result are pictures which always convey painting also as a meta level in the treatment of reality. Reality fragments testify to individual and collective references to a world which Sturm challenges with quite different levels of attention.

Thomas Sturm is the painter behind his pictures, which, above all, is reflected in the great degree of authenticity of his oeuvre. Aloof from a romantic invocation of “inner” images, each group of works is inextricably linked to his personality.

The pictures convey desires, dreams and fears amidst joyful and obsessive thoughts. Thus, a world of images develops that tells much about Thomas Sturm without actually giving away anything. It is especially this interplay that adds excitement and complexity to his works and turns them into a superior and internationally oriented contribution of Austrian contemporary art.
